Procedures
●Warning up by learning about adjectives→Comparatives
Adjectives of just one syllable form the comparative by adding "-er":
Bright … brighter
Clear … clearer
Fast … faster
If a one syllable adjective ends in "e", simply add "r":
Nice … nicer
Fine … finer
Ripe … riper
For some adjectives, it is necessary to double the last letter before adding "-er". (For spelling: doubling letters, see next week’s grammar question).
Big … bigger
Slim … slimmer
Flat … flatter
● Vocabulary and listening
1 Look and describe.
Now let’s turn to page 14. Look at the photos and describe the places. Use the words and phrases to help you.
Suzhou Creek
Shanghai lies in East China. It has 13 million people. Hong Kong is in South China. It has seven million people, so Shanghai is bigger than Hong Kong. The Victoria Peak is 554 meters high in Hong Kong. The Bund is 1.5 kilometers long in Shanghai. Shanghai is older than Hong Kong. It has a long history of seven hundred years.
2 Listen and match.
Next you are to listen to listen and match the words in the box on page 14 with the words and phrases in Activity 1. After listening check your answers with your neighbor.
3 Listen and read.
Now turn to page 15. You will listen to a dialogue between Tony and Daming about Shanghai and Hong Kong. While listening please take notes of the important facts about the two cities.
Now you will go on to read the typescript aloud, trying to cut/ the sentences into groups of thought,
blacken the predicates, darken
the connectives and underline the expressions.
4 Answer the questions.
Pay attention to the structure of the adjective’s comparative uses.
Is Hong Kong bigger than Shanghai? →No.
Is Hong Kong hotter than Shanghai? →Yes.
Is Shanghai warmer in winter than Hong Kong? →No.
Is Shanghai hotter than Hong Kong? →No.
Is Hong Kong older than Shanghai? → No.
Is Shanghai busier than Hong Kong? → Yes.
●Pronunciation and speaking
5 Listen to the underlined word.
Now you will listen to the underlined word on page 15. And work in pairs to repeat the sentences.
After listening make your own sentences with the same structures.
Taiyuan is bigger than Beijing.→ No, it isn’t. It is smaller.
The summer in Taiyuan is cooler. →Yes, it is. It is cooler.
Taiyuan is hotter than Beijing. →No, it isn’t. It is cooler.
